All people have their coming-of-age-movie moments as pre-teens or teens. For me growing up on staten island, there was a constant struggle between the forces of rock and disco before I grew up and realized that you can like all kinds of music and it really wasn't like choosing between God and Satan. It was more like having a preference for Pepsi or Coca Cola (or RC, anybody?).

In junior high school, back in the days of pac man, atari and jordache jeans, a big weekend event was rollerskating. "Skate Odyssey" was THE place to be. And I'd tow either my cheapy blue sneaker skates or the more ankle-supportive black vinyl versions (with neon yellow wheels) with me there and get my "skate" on.

I have many great memories of trying to impress girls and getting hopped up on pop-rocks and soda. And some not-so fond memories like having to sit out the "backwards" skate for my lack of skills (I could pull it off NOW!) or the time I got sick at the rink after sharing a whole pack of Marlboro Lights with my best friend in the woods by his house.

The discoskater line, for me, brings me back to the days of scribbling band logos on my blue binder with a bic pen and popping in the latest cassette from Van Halen, The Cars or Rush. The concerns of the day were whether to play street hockey or a game of "lefty" (playing stickball swinging from the other side of the plate) and the needle dropping on the right song at Skate Odyssey was the greatest thing ever.
